We used to use a water-filled base on our super windy balcony here in the windy city (chicago), but it was annoying to fill up, empty, and maintain in general (cant be out in super cold conditions). It's also a bit bulky and hefty, blocking out that part of our small balcony -- so you can't really put anything on top of it. the old water filled base is also shaky and unstable--the umbrella used to rock back and forth on it, so we had to keep it tucked into a corner of the balcony, limiting its usefulness.This base is heavy, stable, and holds up really well in super windy chicago conditions (and it's windy literally all the time). We can also put our chairs on top of the base and push them closer to each other, which saves on space, as you can see in the photo. The space saving design also lets us put it more in the center or wherever we want in the balcony, instead of pushing it in the corner for stability. Highly recommended if you've got the same issues that we did!
